Leadership Is Lonely... Until You Stop Carrying Everyone

I've been thinking a lot lately about the phrase:

"Leadership is lonely."

And for years, I believed it.

Because leadership meant:

Carrying the weight.

Making difficult decisions.

Protecting the business.

Keeping the peace.

Trying not to upset people.

Putting everyone else's needs before my own.

And somewhere along the way, I confused leadership with responsibility for everyone.

The problem?

No one can sustainably carry that forever.

Recently I've been navigating one of the biggest changes in my business.

Changing systems.

Changing expectations.

Building a model that is sustainable not just for my team, but for me too.

And I've realised something uncomfortable.

Sometimes the loneliness of leadership isn't because you're making the wrong decisions.

It's because you're finally making the decisions you know are right.

Even when they're unpopular.

Even when people don't understand.

Even when there's a possibility some people won't come with you.

For a long time I thought being a good leader meant making everyone happy.

Now I think it means something very different.

I think it means creating something sustainable.

Protecting your health.

Protecting your peace.

And having the courage to stop carrying things that were never yours to carry in the first place.

Because leadership isn't sacrificing yourself for everyone else.

Leadership is building something that allows everyone - including you - to thrive.
